With the onset of winter, comes the cold and flu season like an unwanted house guest that arrives unannounced, never cleans up after himself, and is hard to get to leave once he settles in. So it begs the question,”What can I do about this?” The best way, they say, is an ounce of prevention. But with stress, pollution, and bad habits abounding, sadly, we will inevitably run ourselves down to the point where we will get a cold along with a scratchy throat. The flu can’t be far around the corner.

Here is something that you can do. You’ve heard it before and it’s boring but sleep and a good diet are probably the best things you can do to prevent a cold or flu. Equally important is to make sure that you are getting a good dose of Vitamin D during the winter months when the flu is prevalent because it is now known to boost immunity. I recommend 2000 to 5000 IU of a good quality Vitamin D3. However, barring that, the next thing would be to help with the symptoms of a scratchy throat and a stuffy nose.

As a holistic chiropractor, you are not going to hear me tell you to take Nyquil or Theraflu. I prefer a more natural and alternative approach, and since I am a food militant that, of course, means organic or definitely lightly processed and non-GMO. I like Organic slippery elm tea. It works well for a scratchy sore throat as well as laryngitis. Organic Throat Coat Tea by Traditional Medicinals is a good one that I learned about from a singer on my first trip to Hollywood. There‘s a good story to tell, but you’ll just have to come to the office to hear it! It works for laryngitis and for any dry throat or sore throat.

For stuffy noses and clogged sinuses, Organic Nettle Tea, also by Traditional Medicinals, is excellent – it is high in antioxidants and one earthy teabag steeped in 8 oz. of hot water for 10 minutes will help to open your sinuses and clear a stuffy nose. Additionally, it is a proven remedy for seasonal allergies. As a mild sufferer myself, I use it in the spring and as needed. Two to three cups per week is all you need to stop the unrelenting sneezing and watery eyes of hay fever. Another natural product which is promoted as an anti-allergy supplement is called Natural D-Hist. It comes in adult and children's versions and has been proven to help prevent chronic "cold-weather induced" bronchitis in an elderly or susceptible population.

With colds all around us in New York City, the flu can’t be far around the corner. To vaccinate to not to vaccinate… I prefer not to vaccinate. There are excellent alternatives to the flu vaccine, no matter what the CDC and World Health Organization (WHO) will tell you. I haven’t had the flu in almost 20 years – after the worst flu virus of my life – it was such a virulent strain with waves of pain through every part of my body. It was a long and difficult five days that I swore I would never repeat. And I am happy to report here that I never have had the flu again, well at least not for more than 8 hours.

The remedy to take is Oscillococcinum. Of course, as is the nature of all things sometimes, I saw a commercial on TV three days after I got better. Naturally, it stuck with me and I have made sure to keep doses handy. I now inform all of my patients to do so as well. It has become an integral part of my winter health kit and I can tell you that it never fails. At the first sign of flu symptoms (that achy, shivery, headachy feeling), take a dose of this sweet tasting homeopathic remedy. It is a medicine that Mary Poppins would certainly approve of and you may never get sick with the flu again. Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic remedy by BOIRON, an excellent company with a gold-standard in the quality assurance of their products. A single dose of Oscillococcinum taken in time will prevent the flu from happening. A dose taken a little later than immediately may render you with the flu for 6-8 hours. It is for this reason, that I question the voracity of the media and the medical outlets to push flu vaccinations to all citizens of the world.

H1N1 – the swine flu? It is a type A Influenza virus and therefore no different than any other flu virus. Oscillococcinum is equally effective in treating Swine Flu symptoms. For those of you who are still a bit queasy with the idea of a homeopathic remedy, Tamiflu works in the similar way as Oscillococcinum – it is just a whole lot more expensive and you will need a prescription to get it.

If this hasn't yet convinced you to be wary of the flu vaccine, please note that the vaccine may not likely prevent you from getting the flu since immunologists pick which strains they think will be prevalent 6-8 months in advance. They are often incorrect. But more importantly, the Swine Flu vaccine with its myriad of neurological side effects is now fully incorporated in the average yearly flu vaccine. Many recipients of that vaccine have suffered a Guillain-Barré type syndrome. You can find more information by clicking on the links below.
